The Paterson City Council on Tuesday approved Mayor Andre Sayegh’s $287 million budget in a vote taken just before midnight. Council members voted 8-1 to approve the fiscal 2020 budget, a remarkable change of fortune for the mayor who last week could not count on five votes.
The budget includes money for improvements to various city parks, new equipment to clean the streets and the purchase of 150 body cameras for police officers.
The total amount of taxes collected for the city government will increase by 2 percent under the budget. But officials said many homeowners will end up paying less in taxes for city services because Paterson’s tax base increased by $400 million.
